suyo

his

determiner SOO-yoh Less Common

Also means

hers; theirs; yours (formal)

Usage Note

Suyo is the strong/postpositive possessive for third-person singular and plural (and formal usted/ustedes): un amigo suyo ('a friend of his/hers/theirs/yours'). It agrees with the thing possessed, not the possessor: la maleta suya (feminine, because maleta is feminine). The weak proclitic form su is used before nouns; suyo/suya appears after the noun or as a predicate.

Examples

"Este abrigo es suyo, no mío."

Natural Translation

This coat is his/hers, not mine.
