cuánto

how much

pronoun determiner KWAHN-toh Less Common

Also means

how many

Usage Note

Cuánto (with written accent) is the interrogative and exclamatory form; without an accent, cuanto is the relative quantifier meaning 'as much/many as'. As a determiner it agrees in gender and number: cuánto, cuánta, cuántos, cuántas. In exclamations it signals intensity (¡Cuánta gente!, 'So many people!'). The unaccented cuanto antes ('as soon as possible') is a fixed phrase worth memorising separately.
