regalar

to give as a gift

verb rreh-gah-LAHR Less Common

Usage Note

Regalar means to give something as a gift, not merely to give (dar). Me regalaron un libro means 'they gave me a book as a present.' The noun regalo ('gift') shares the root, and the phrase regalado is used colloquially in Latin America to mean something obtained for free or very cheaply.

Examples

"Le regalé flores a mi madre."

Natural Translation

I gave my mother flowers as a gift.

Literal Translation

To-her I-gifted flowers to my mother.
