Prometido is the past participle of prometer (to promise) used as a noun meaning 'the promised one' — i.e. a fiancé. The feminine prometida means fiancée. It is more formal than novio/novia, which covers both boyfriend/girlfriend and fiancé. Prometido unambiguously implies an engagement, whereas novio alone is ambiguous about commitment level.
