Usage Note

Mío is the strong (tonic) possessive, contrasting with the weak mi (before a noun). As a pronoun it stands alone (el mío, 'mine'); as a postposed determiner it follows the noun (un amigo mío, 'a friend of mine'). It agrees in gender and number: mío, mía, míos, mías. The phrase ¡Dios mío! ('My God!') is one of the most common fixed expressions using this form.
