investigar

to investigate

verb een-beh-stee-GAHR Less Common

Also means

to research

Usage Note

Investigar covers both journalistic/police investigation and academic research — a wider remit than English 'investigate'. The agent noun investigador/investigadora therefore means both 'detective/investigator' and 'researcher/scientist' depending on context. Note the spelling: it begins inves-, not inbes-, a common misspelling.

Examples

"Los científicos investigan las causas de la enfermedad."

Natural Translation

The scientists are investigating the causes of the disease.
