Hipotético describes something assumed for the sake of argument rather than established as fact. It pairs naturally with caso (caso hipotético, 'hypothetical case') and escenario (escenario hipotético, 'hypothetical scenario'). The adverb form is hipotéticamente. It belongs to academic and journalistic registers; in casual speech Spanish speakers more often say imaginemos que ('let's imagine that').
