Usage Note
Abandonado functions both as an adjective and as the past participle of abandonar. Applied to places it means 'deserted' (un edificio abandonado); applied to people it carries an emotional weight of neglect or desertion. The feminine form is abandonada; it is also used as a noun (los abandonados = 'the abandoned ones').
