ascensor
lift
noun ahs-sehn-SOHR Rare
Origin: From Latin ascensor (one who ascends).
Also means
elevator
Usage Note
Ascensor is the standard term in Spain for a lift (British English) or elevator (American English). In Latin America both ascensor and elevador are used depending on country. The verb to take the lift is coger/tomar el ascensor. Don't confuse it with ascenso (promotion, rise) — a common mix-up for learners.
Examples
"El ascensor del edificio estaba averiado."
Natural Translation
The building's lift was out of order.
