Usage Note

Antagonista is common gender — el antagonista or la antagonista — following the same pattern as artista or atleta. In narrative it is the character who opposes the protagonist. In pharmacology antagonista refers to a substance that blocks a receptor. The adjective antagónico means 'antagonistic' or 'conflicting'.
