Antaño is a literary or formal adverb evoking a vague but distant past, roughly equivalent to 'in bygone days' or 'of old'. It is not interchangeable with antes (neutral 'before') and carries a nostalgic or rhetorical tone. Its opposite, hogaño ('nowadays'), is now quite rare.
