íntimo

intimate

adjective EEN-tee-moh Less Common

Origin: From Latin intimus ('innermost').

Also means

close

Usage Note

Íntimo describes a very close personal relationship (amigo íntimo = close friend) or something deeply private (diario íntimo = personal diary). It is less sexually charged in Spanish than 'intimate' can be in English — relaciones íntimas can mean sexual relations but cena íntima simply means a private, cosy dinner. The noun form is intimidad ('privacy, intimacy').

Examples

"Es mi amiga más íntima."

Natural Translation

She is my closest friend.
