yo

I

pronoun yoh Common

Usage Note

Yo is the first-person singular subject pronoun. Because Spanish verb endings already encode person and number, subject pronouns like yo are routinely omitted unless emphasis or contrast is needed: hablo español is perfectly natural, while yo hablo español stresses 'I (and not someone else) speak Spanish'. Overusing yo can sound unnatural or self-important to native ears.

Examples

"Yo no sé la respuesta."

Natural Translation

I don't know the answer.
