vacante
vacant
adjective bah-KAHN-teh Rare
Origin: Latin vacantem (being empty).
Also means
empty
Usage Note
Vacante also functions as a feminine noun meaning a vacancy or open position: hay una vacante en el departamento ('there is a vacancy in the department'). As an adjective it agrees in number but not gender (un puesto vacante, una silla vacante). It is a false friend for English speakers: it does NOT mean 'on vacation' — that is de vacaciones.
Examples
"Hay tres plazas vacantes en el tribunal."
Natural Translation
There are three vacant positions on the court.
