taller

workshop

noun tah-YEHR Less Common

Origin: From French atelier.

Also means

garage (repair shop)

Usage Note

Taller can mean an artisan's workshop, an artistic studio, or a car-repair garage (taller mecánico). In educational contexts a taller is a hands-on seminar or practical workshop, as opposed to a lecture. Its French origin (atelier) is still transparent; the -ll- is pronounced 'y' following standard Spanish phonology.

Examples

"El taller mecánico cierra los domingos."

Natural Translation

The repair garage closes on Sundays.
