reír

to laugh

verb rreh-EER Less Common

Usage Note

Reír is a stem-changing verb (e→i in stressed syllables): río, ríes, ríe, reímos, reís, ríen. The reflexive reírse ('to laugh' or 'to laugh at') is equally common and adds a slightly more spontaneous or uncontrolled nuance. Reírse de alguien means 'to laugh at/mock someone', so be careful of context.

Examples

"Todos se pusieron a reír al ver su disfraz."

Natural Translation

Everyone burst out laughing when they saw his costume.
