stripe
Usage Note
Raya covers a drawn or printed line, a stripe on fabric or an animal, and the parting in one's hair. It is also the name of the stingray fish. The phrase pasarse de la raya means 'to cross the line' (to go too far), a common idiom. Don't confuse with ralla (from rallar, to grate), a frequent spelling trap.
Examples
"El tigre tiene rayas naranjas y negras."
Natural Translation
The tiger has orange and black stripes.
