Usage Note
Portal has two main senses in modern Spanish: the entrance vestibule of a building (where letterboxes and the staircase are found), and an internet gateway website. In Spain the building-entrance sense is dominant; in Latin America entrada or lobby may be preferred for the physical space. El portal de Belén refers to the Nativity scene at Christmas.
