Usage Note

Plusmarca is a sports term meaning a record performance — the best time, distance, or score ever achieved. Batir una plusmarca means to break a record. It is the standard word in Spain for athletic records; in Latin America récord (borrowed from English) is more commonly used. The holder of the record is a plusmarquista.
