arquero

archer

noun ahr-KEH-rroh Rare

Also means

goalkeeper

Usage Note

Arquero means 'archer' (one who shoots with a bow) but in Latin American Spanish it is the standard word for a football goalkeeper, equivalent to portero in Spain. This regional split is important: if you say arquero in a sporting context in Mexico, Argentina, or Chile, everyone understands 'goalkeeper', not 'bowman'.

Examples

"El arquero atajó el penalti en el último minuto."

Natural Translation

The goalkeeper saved the penalty in the last minute.
