pívot

pivot

noun PEE-boht Less Common

Origin: From French pivot.

Usage Note

Pívot is a loanword used primarily in basketball to denote the centre/pivot player position. The accent mark preserves the stress on the first syllable against Spanish's default penultimate-stress rule. In technical or mechanical contexts pivote (without the accent) is also used for a physical pivot or pin.

Examples

"El pívot anotó diez puntos en el partido."

Natural Translation

The pivot scored ten points in the game.
