Noción most often appears in the plural nociones, meaning 'basic knowledge' or 'rudiments': tengo nociones de italiano ('I have a basic grasp of Italian'). In the singular it means an abstract concept or idea. The phrase no tener la menor noción means 'to have not the slightest idea'. It is a formal register word; in casual speech idea or concepto are more common.
