no

no; not

adverb NOH Common

Usage Note

No is placed directly before the verb it negates, with no extra word needed (No como carne = 'I don't eat meat'). In a double-negative construction the second negative word (nadie, nada, nunca) co-occurs naturally (No vino nadie), unlike in standard English. It also functions as a question tag: Es tarde, ¿no?

Examples

"No entiendo nada."

Natural Translation

I don't understand anything.

Literal Translation

Not I-understand anything
