mirada

look

noun mee-RAH-dah Less Common

Also means

gaze

Usage Note

Mirada is the concrete noun for a look or gaze — echar una mirada means 'to take a look.' It carries more emotional weight than a glance; a mirada fija is a fixed stare. Not to be confused with vista (vision, view) or mirar (the verb 'to look'). Una mirada often conveys more than words in literary prose.

Examples

"Me lanzó una mirada de sorpresa."

Natural Translation

She gave me a surprised look.

Literal Translation

To-me she-threw a look of surprise.
