Labor is feminine — la labor — which surprises learners since it ends in a consonant (most -or nouns are masculine, e.g. el color). It is a formal or literary synonym for 'work' or 'task', often implying sustained effort (la labor docente, the teaching profession). The plural labores was historically used for domestic chores (sus labores, housework), now considered dated.
