lástima

pity; shame

noun LAHS-tee-mah Rare

Usage Note

Lástima is used in the common exclamation ¡Qué lástima! (What a shame! / What a pity!). It takes the structure es una lástima que + subjunctive: Es una lástima que no puedas venir (It's a pity you can't come). Note that lástima refers to the feeling of pity or sorrow at a loss, not compassion for a person — for that, use compasión or pena.

Examples

"¡Qué lástima que no puedas quedarte!"

Natural Translation

What a shame you can't stay!
