Usage Note
Fichar has two distinct everyday senses: in sports it means to sign or transfer a player (el club fichó a un delantero); in the workplace it means to clock in or out by swiping a card (fichar a la entrada). A fichaje is the player transfer or signing itself. The noun ficha (card, chip) is the root.
