entrever

to glimpse

verb en-treh-BEHR Rare

Also means

to make out

Usage Note

Entrever is a compound of entre (between) + ver (to see), conjugated irregularly like ver (present: entreveo, preterite: entreví). It conveys seeing something only partially or imperfectly — a dimly lit figure or a fleeting possibility. The figurative use ('to sense vaguely') is equally common as the literal.

Examples

"Pudo entrever una figura en la niebla."

Natural Translation

He could make out a figure in the fog.
