encomendar

to entrust

verb en-koh-men-DAHR Rare

Also means

to assign

Usage Note

Encomendar means to entrust a task or person to someone's care; it is the root of encomienda, the colonial labour system in Spanish America. The verb is stem-changing (e → ie): encomiendo, encomiendan. It is more formal than encargar (to assign) but both can describe delegating a task; encomendar implies a stronger sense of care or responsibility.

Examples

"Le encomendaron la tarea más difícil."

Natural Translation

They entrusted him with the most difficult task.
