Usage Note

Despido refers specifically to the termination of an employment contract, most often by an employer. Key legal distinctions in Spanish labour law: despido procedente (fair dismissal), despido improcedente (unfair dismissal), and despido colectivo (collective redundancy). Do not confuse with despedida (farewell or send-off), which is a different word with a different suffix.
