Usage Note

Despertar is a stem-changing verb (e→ie: despierto, despiertas…). It is used transitively (el ruido me despertó, the noise woke me) and reflexively (me desperté tarde, I woke up late). Metaphorically it means to arouse interest or curiosity (despertar el interés).
