Usage Note
Desolado describes both a physical landscape stripped of life (un paisaje desolado) and a person overcome with grief or despair (estaba desolado tras la noticia). The two senses are equally common. When used of people, it is stronger than triste ('sad') and implies a more crushing emotional state — closer to 'devastated' than merely 'upset'.
