Usage Note
Contrariamente is a formal connective adverb used to introduce a contrasting statement, usually followed by a — contrariamente a lo esperado (contrary to expectations). It is more formal than al contrario or sin embargo and is mainly found in written argumentation and academic prose. When two -mente adverbs appear in sequence, the suffix is dropped from all but the last.
