Usage Note

Contrario functions as both a noun ('the opposite', 'the opponent') and an adjective ('contrary'). The fixed phrase al contrario means 'on the contrary', and de lo contrario means 'otherwise'. As an adjective it agrees in gender: la dirección contraria = 'the opposite direction'. Do not confuse with contrariedad ('setback, annoyance').
