Also means
opponent
Usage Note
Contrario functions as both a noun ('the opposite', 'the opponent') and an adjective ('contrary'). The fixed phrase al contrario means 'on the contrary', and de lo contrario means 'otherwise'. As an adjective it agrees in gender: la dirección contraria = 'the opposite direction'. Do not confuse with contrariedad ('setback, annoyance').
Examples
"Al contrario, me parece una buena idea."
Natural Translation
On the contrary, it seems like a good idea to me.
Literal Translation
To-me-seems a good idea.
