Usage Note
Contingencia refers to an uncertain or unforeseen event, and it is especially common in formal, legal, and business registers — plan de contingencia ('contingency plan') is a staple of corporate and emergency management language. In philosophy it denotes the quality of being possible but not necessary, as opposed to necesidad. The adjective contingente shares the same root.
