Conmoción covers two main uses: a social or emotional upheaval (la noticia causó conmoción = the news caused a commotion) and the medical term for concussion (conmoción cerebral). The plural conmociones is regular. It is a formal register word; in casual speech revuelo or alboroto are more common for social disturbance.
