Usage Note

Concubina refers to a woman living with a man in a long-term relationship without marriage, historically often in a legally recognized but subordinate status. The male counterpart is concubino. In modern Spanish the term is largely historical, literary, or legal; in everyday speech pareja or compañera are used instead. The abstract noun is concubinato.
