Usage Note
Comadrona is the traditional word for midwife, derived from comadre (a term for a close female relationship, originally a co-godmother). The modern professional term is matrona in Spain. Comadrona is still widely used in Latin America and informal speech. The male equivalent comadrón exists but is rare.
