Usage Note
Causante can be a noun ('the one who caused something': el causante del accidente) or an adjective ('causative': el factor causante). It functions as a common-gender noun — el causante / la causante — so the article signals the person's gender, not the word itself. In legal Spanish it also means a testator (the person who leaves an estate).
Examples
"Buscan al causante del incendio."
Natural Translation
They are looking for the one who caused the fire.
