abogar
to advocate
verb ah-boh-GAHR Less Common
Origin: from Latin advocare (to call to one's aid)
Also means
to plead
Usage Note
Abogar is always followed by por: abogar por los derechos humanos (to advocate for human rights). It is a formal word — everyday speech uses defender or apoyar instead. Do not confuse it with the noun abogado (lawyer): though both share the Latin root advocare, abogar in modern usage means to advocate publicly, not to practise law.
Examples
"La ONG aboga por los derechos de los refugiados."
Natural Translation
The NGO advocates for the rights of refugees.
