Usage Note
Cabildo has two main senses: the governing council of a Canary Island (el cabildo insular — the island council, equivalent to a provincial government), and in the Church, a cathedral chapter (cabildo catedralicio). Historically it also referred to colonial town councils in Latin America. In mainland Spain outside the Canaries it is chiefly ecclesiastical.
