cabida

capacity; room

noun kah-BEE-dah Rare

Usage Note

Cabida most often appears in the fixed phrase dar cabida a — 'to make room for' or 'to accommodate' — as in el estadio da cabida a 50,000 personas. It is feminine, as expected of nouns ending in -ida. Outside fixed phrases it sounds formal; in everyday speech espacio or lugar are more natural alternatives.

Examples

"El salón no tiene cabida para más sillas."

Natural Translation

The living room has no room for more chairs.
