Acercamiento is the noun from acercar (to bring closer) and describes a move toward reconciliation or closer relations between parties — diplomatic, personal, or ideological. Un acercamiento entre los dos países is a standard diplomatic phrase. The physical sense (getting physically nearer) also exists but is less common than aproximación.
