Origin: From Latin Belgae, the tribal name of the ancient inhabitants of the region.
Usage Note
Belga is invariable for gender (un ciudadano belga, una ciudad belga) because it ends in -a and applies to both masculine and feminine nouns. As a noun it means a Belgian person (los belgas = the Belgians). Belgium is Bélgica in Spanish.
