basketball

noun BAHS-ket Rare

Origin: Borrowed from English basketball, shortened form.

Usage Note

Basket is an informal shortening of baloncesto (the standard Spanish term for basketball) widely used in sports journalism, especially in Spain. In Latin America básquetbol or básquetball is more common. As a borrowed noun it is masculine and invariable in plural (los basket), though los partidos de basket is the more natural phrasing.

They play basketball every Saturday.
