asumir

to assume

verb ah-soo-MEER Less Common

Also means

to take on

Usage Note

Asumir is a false friend in one sense: while it can mean 'to assume' (a role, a responsibility), it does not mean 'to assume' in the sense of supposing something without proof — for that, suponer is the standard choice. Asumir responsabilidades (to take on responsibilities) is the most frequent collocation.

Examples

"Debes asumir las consecuencias de tus actos."

Natural Translation

You must assume the consequences of your actions.
