aquel

that (distant)

determiner ah-KEHL Common

Usage Note

Aquel is the masculine singular of the distal demonstrative, pointing to something distant from both speaker and listener; the feminine is aquella, plurals aquellos/aquellas. The pronoun forms used to carry an accent (aquél) but the Real Academia Española dropped the accent in 2010, so both forms are now spelled identically. It contrasts with the nearby este (this) and the mid-distance ese (that).

Examples

"Aquel edificio es muy antiguo."

Natural Translation

That building (over there) is very old.
