Ambos (feminine ambas) is a formal or literary word for 'both'; in everyday speech los dos / las dos is more common. It functions as a determiner (ambos lados, 'both sides') or as a pronoun (ambos llegaron, 'both arrived'). English 'both... and' is rendered tanto... como rather than with ambos.
