Usage Note

Anotar covers both writing something down (anotar un número) and scoring in sport (anotar un gol, anotar una canasta). In Latin American sports commentary it is the default verb for scoring, whereas Spain often prefers marcar for goals. The reflexive anotarse means to score a win or to sign up for something.
