Vecindad is slightly more formal or literary than vecindario (neighbourhood) and can also mean the abstract condition of being neighbours. In Mexico, vecindad refers specifically to a traditional communal housing complex — a courtyard surrounded by small dwellings — a culturally distinct meaning. The related noun vecino/vecina means neighbour.
